I had Thai food Friday night with a friend. It was take-out, a fifteen minute walk to her house. It was still a little warm when we ate it.

red curry w/pumpkin and tofu
pad thai
red snapper & prawns w/veggies in some kind of sweet sauce

We dined on the rooftop of her building and looked out upon the city. We saw a murder of crows fly over the harbour. Her young daughter ate the food with her hands, and we were both given to remark how neither of us had such exotic diets as children.

Later, we had a conversation that lasted for hours.

It happened late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning at the home of a 600-pound woman who was having trouble breathing. Rescuers went in not knowing how difficult it would be to get her out. 40-year-old Gail Grinds was literally stuck to her couch and had to be removed surgically at the hospital.

Authorities estimate she had been on the couch anywhere from two to five years.

Martin County Fire amd Rescue crews faced what seemed to be an impossible mission. Everyone going inside had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air.

They tried to cut out the front door, but at four-and-a-half feet wide, it wouldn't work. They had to cut plywood since a normal stretcher wouldn't do.

An ambulance was too small, so they brought in a trailer to get her out. While rescue crews came up with a back-door rescue plan, detectives secured what had become a crime scene, questioning family members about how it got so bad.

Using planks, they loaded the woman on to the trailer, still attached to the couch. Removing her would be too painful, since her body is grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin has literally become one with the sofa and it must be surgically removed.

Detectives are investigating whether they have a case of neglect, or if it is simply a very sad story.

Grinds was taken to the Martin Memorial hospital where doctors removed her from the couch, but she died in spite of all the attempts to save her life.

Moderate Road Rage?

Today I joined the "Sunday drivers" on the road (bad idea, I know) and after having escaped the guy who hovered just under the speed limit, I found myself at a green light being drag-raced by a Ford Windstar. I ran out of lane before he did.

After my initial howling response, I decided to pity this poor, poor, pathetic man who is reduced to driving a minivan and trying to beat cute girls in RAV4s off the line (I beat him off the line, but then ran out of room before I could safely pass. I make my car go quite well, considering its mechanical limitations.)...who knows how unhappy the rest of his little life is, after all.

Then even at the grocery store, there seemed to be a big "BLOCK MY WAY! CUT ME OFF! NO, NO! YOU FIRST, PLEASE!!!!!" sign over my head.

I became resigned to my fate, and moderated my road rage.

I thought about posting this to Rant, but I'm not really ranty about it. Maybe I'm feeling moderately worried, so I'll post my worried in the moderate zone:

There was a tribe called "Show and Tell" -- I don't know that I read the description. It was a basic meme-distribution-with-commentary place for discussion, with no discernable central theme. There were about 400 members, many of whom posted with zeal, and near oral-compulsive enthusiasm. I was a member for about three or four weeks, during which time I almost left the tribe several times, just because I was frustrated trying to keep up with the volume of posts.

But I didn't. There were a lot of really funny threads, and sasstasstic comments that made me giggle or snicker, respectively. So I stayed there, and dealt with the glaring "Show and Tell: 1400 new posts" notifier on my homepage with mild chagrin.

Now it's gone; the Moderator made some comment in the middle of a thread that contained some racial epithets (I should say "apparently contained," as I was not keeping up). Someone got offended, and as part of the offended-person's defense, he went and found the Moderator's personal information, and posted it to the tribe with some kind of threat attached to it. Place of residence, employment, middle name, etc. The Moderator freaked out, and closed the tribe.

So. What's the deal with that? The invasive part is disturbing. Well, very disturbing. And now the both of them are going round-and-round in Tribe Moderators.

I feel like my little happy corner of Tribe.net is going just happy and nice, and then notice crap like this going on. Here I was hoping this was better than usenet...

Spread the Word: The Misfit Library

In collaboration with Sarah Lynch-Walker, I am pleased to announce the formation of The Misfit Library, a writers' circle and quarterly journal.

Our goal is to provide lesser-known writers of higher quality (like ourselves, we'd like to think) with a support and editing group, exposure via our printed journal, on- and off-line promotion, and even a (presumably very small) paycheck. We're currently looking to Lulu for printing and basic distribution services, although this isn't yet set in stone. Proceeds from the sale of each issue will be divided equally among its contributors, no matter who does how much work.

The Misfit Library will function as a collective, with no more than thirteen members at any time. Acceptance into the group (as with any other decisions down the road) will be handled by the blackball method; if we choose you as the third member, you would have the ability to veto a potential fourth. You can leave the group at any time, but to remain you must submit a piece for each issue, and be active in the editing, feedback, and decision-making (voting) processes.

We will consider fiction (short or serialized), non-fiction (essays or articles), and "sequential art" (that means comics) for inclusion in the printed journal. Poetry had better be <i>really</i> fucking good. If you're interested in joining up, we ask to see one and one half pieces (you read that right) of any of the above.

Our editorial motto: "Nobody likes crap. Especially if they're paying for it." If you send in your 1.5, expect us to be harsh. If you end up being a part of this, plan on being harsh.

If this sounds like it might be up any of your alleys, contact myself or Sarah to let us know, and we'll get you some info on the submission process. As for where we take The Misfit Library from here, and how we take it, we want you to help us decide. We're pretty smart, and we've got some solid plans, but if you're coming in we can only assume the same goes for you.

Please feel free, or at least cheap, to pass this on to any and/or all potentially interested parties.

i posted this in an art related tribe and got not a bite, then i thought about posting in the cognitive science tribe but decided against it after the hoopla over homeopathics- i just wasn't sure of the reception i'd get- so i figured i'd try it out here::

i've just started an interdisciplinary MA program (i'm designing my own program of study). i hemmed and hawed about starting an MFA program but i want a broader program.

i want to study art brut (specifically works produced by the mentally ill), but from an art therapy/sociology/psychology standpoint with a little bit of forensics thrown in. i want apply knowledge from the psychology behind art therapy and abnormal psych to identify elements that typically appear in visual work produced by individuals suffering from different mental illnesses (as well as trauma of abuse, etc- more for comparative research rather than for actual application as an art therapist).

then i'd like to turn that knowledge of the 'why' and the 'how' towards 'reverse engineering' works from art history. although i know this has been done before, in a number of different contexts, i'm really interested in studying the visual output of artists to deduce what their mental states were likely to have been (think van gogh) but then applying this to contemporary artists. i'm still undecided if i really want to pursue the art therapy piece further and work in that field, at the moment i'm more interested in the research and art history side.

and to explain the van gogh reference- there's this aspect of art history which just may be a result of popular culture's emphasis on forensics, crime, etc, but think it's been around longer than that- i'm referring to forensic psychology as applied to artists. for instance, there was this contingent of art historians and psychologists (in the mid 90s, i think) who were trying to determine what mental illness(es) van gogh may have suffered from by looking at changes in his color pallette and brush strokes.

so i wanted to get some feedback from you folks.

Overheard on Broadway: "Yeah, they were bad ass! They played Johnny Cash and G.G. Allin covers in the same set!" This stunning musical feat takes talent, apparently, not to mention an astoundingly firm grasp of the obvious. It's interesting, though, that not so long ago this could seemed like an odd juxtaposition, whereas now it's about the most predictable thing a self-described punk band could do onstage. Clearly I think about these things far too much.

Considering that I'm dividing my week between three cities that are renowned for rain -- especially at this time of year -- it's surprising how few clouds I've seen, at least since leaving Portland. With clear skies over Seattle and Vancouver, even from the middle of either town the views are truly stunning. Everywhere I turn, I seem to come face t face with snow-capped mountains and pine-covered islands. This is particularly true of Vancouver. Oddly enough, the way this scenery so forcefully envelopes the city reminds me most of all of Croatia, even if the similarities do end there. To say that Vancouver outshines Seattle in this respect is saying a hell of a lot, too.

I can't say quite so much about what Portland looks like yet, but thinking also of my San Francisco, I see that maybe this is one of the main differences between East and West Coast cities. Out here cities seem to almost blend in with the land they were built on, whereas back east they consume their environments completely, replacing these landscapes instead of growing into them. Think of Boston, where the hills have been leveled to fill in the harbor, or Manhattan, where you'd never know you were on an island unless you like to hang out near highways.

What I can say about Portland is that yes, I'm afraid the rumors are true.

"You know," I said to Amanda over breakfast at a heavily dreadlocked and hair-dyed diner on Friday, "everywhere you've taken me so far has been incredibly... hip."

"It's not like I'm trying," she said, "that's just Portland." Only moments before, we had walked past a hair salon that serves P.B.R. to its customers. I had to concede that the gas station near her apartment was an exception, but perhaps it was only there to prove the rule.

Anyway, it's nice to finally have some time to get to know the West Coast outside California. It's certainly good to be remind that there <i>is</i> a West Coast outside California. I think we Bay dwellers have an easy time forgetting this. Yes, Miss Mission-Dweller, your really can keep driving north past Marin!

Actually, I can't help but recommend you give it a try.

Coming out of the subway always disorients me. It's that one moment when, seemingly out of nowhere, the open sky appears above me: How did I get here? Is this still my city?

I join the crowds on Market Street, as does the rest of humanity. Everyone around me now is nothing more than a part of this crowd that I both love and hate all at once. The crowd can shove an elbow into my ribs without so much as an "excuse me," and maybe I wish it wouldn't show me this side of itself, but I'm no less taken with it for this offense. The crowd can wink and smile and pay me a compliment, and I'm thrilled, but I resent it as much as ever. The crowd stops me ask me for the time. Doesn't it know?

I stop into Blondie's for a slice of tandoori chicken pizza, and by the time I've returned to the sidewalks the crowd has dissolved. Now I'm surrounded by people, nothing more, each one alone and unique. Hey, she's cute, and God he looks miserable, and why doesn't she watch where she's going? There is no common thread.

The bright windows of the art galleries over on Geary always catch my eye. They've got Salvador Dali, and they've got Marc Chagall, and they've got wheelchair-bound John Doe begging for nickels outside. I wonder about the curators. Do they get the joke? I let the traffic signals dictate my course from there.

Now I sit with a cup of strong coffee as I write this all down. There's a package of sleeping pills, a kind I haven't tried before, in my bag. This, I think, is no different from the crowds.

It's these contrasts, this moment-by-moment chiaroscuro, that gives so much life to my days.

I love that town.

It's worth noting that the Hungarians have a fundamentally depressed culture. Most years they have one of the top five suicide rates worldwide (although I haven't seen any of these statistics since I lived there). Gloomy Sunday, the famous "suicide song" that Billie Holiday recorded, was written by a Hungarian, and a vast portion of the national folklore and history revolves around particularly gruesome deaths.

This is all part of a culture that I wouldn't describe as downbeat so much as soulful, but it's difficult to characterize. If you ever have an opportunity to investigate this firsthand for yourself, I'd have to urge you to take it.
